Monday Musings

For those of you who weren’t in church yesterday, I had the privilege of announcing to our congregation that Nathan Fudge has accepted the position of full time Director of Worship, Youth and Young Adults. Nathan will be commissioned for ministry next Sunday morning and officially begin his full-time work on July 1st. In my conversations with Nathan, he is very excited about this opportunity to give his full-time energy and passion to the job. Please join myself, the Executive and the rest of the staff in congratulating him and committing ourselves to praying diligently for the ministry that God has called him to.
So, next Sunday morning will be a very special Sunday at The River. First of all, in the worship service, not only will we be commissioning Nathan for his new role, but we’ll be baptizing 3 people and welcoming almost 20 new Riverites into our church family. We are growing! After the service, we’ll have our annual year end picnic. This year we’re going all out and having a pig roast. As we know that some kids might not like (or be down right scared of) pig, we’ll also serve hot dogs. Beyond that, there will be jumpy things for the kids, a snow cone maker, a road hockey game, soccer and of course lots of time to socialize. Bring a hockey stick if you want play hockey (maybe even a few extra sticks for those without) and dress for sun, sports and fun. We are still looking for a few volunteers to help set up, serve food and clean up afterwards. Contact Derrick by CLICKING HERE! Feel free to invite a friend or a family of friends. This is going to be AWESOME!
Yesterday, we started a brand new message series entitled, “A Summer of Psalms”. In conjunction with this series, I’m encouraging everyone who attends The River to do AT LEAST one of three things. Either, read the Psalms (1 psalm a day is very doable; except when you come to Psalm 119…it’s very long!). I read Psalm 1 this morning for my devotions. Or, worship the Psalms….Nathan, Derrick or myself will post one song each week based on a Psalm. This week, I found a really cool Israeli band that is singing Psalm 150. Read the Psalm first and then listen to the YouTube video by CLICKING HERE. Or, pray the Psalms. Start this week by praying Eugene Peterson’s version of Psalm 8. It’s a wonderful Psalm that reflects God glory as expressed in creation. Pray it at least once, but even better, more than once, slowly:

    O God
    , brilliant Lord,
        yours is a household name.
    Nursing infants gurgle choruses about you;
        toddlers shout the songs
    That drown out enemy talk,
    and silence atheist babble.

I look up at your macro-skies, dark and enormous,
        your handmade sky-jewelry,
Moon and stars mounted in their settings.
Then I look at my micro-self and wonder,
Why do you bother with us?
Why take a second look our way?

Yet we’ve so narrowly missed being gods,
        bright with Eden’s dawn light.
You put us in charge of your handcrafted world,
    repeated to us your Genesis-charge,
Made us lords of sheep and cattle,
even animals out in the wild,
    Birds flying and fish swimming,
whales singing in the ocean deeps.

    God, brilliant Lord,
your name echoes around the world.
